Artists Bio
Michael Curtis
Born in Edmond, OK
Michael Curtis received his bachelors of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Central Oklahoma in 2023. Drawing is at the core of all the work he does. For him this is a way to observe the world around him in addition to exploring fantasy in a new perspective. With his high academic achievements Michael received the dean's honor roll. part of his early art experience was an assistant art teacher helping organize the learning space and helping those with special needs. His time in observation of the classroom mirrors his own interest in drawing. In his most recent Body of work Michael explored mixing different mediums such as combining red colored pencil, fountain pen and watercolor for his drawings. This work explores a fantasy world with hidden elements. The influences of this work are from the illustrations from The Grimm Brothers and the Fairy Tales we know today.
Artists Statement
My father would read fantasy stories and fairy tales to me when I was a child. I cherished those moments where my mind was allowed to drift into another world. In my current work I recreate that experience. I draw mossy woodland landscapes filled with fantastical creatures and mundane objects. In these works the audience can take their own imaginative journey. I base the hidden elements in these landscapes on fantasy and fairytale stories taking some content from my favorite books like The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of The Rings. From there I build these spaces adding my own imagination. Mixing hidden objects and creatures from different stories allows me to discover something different along the way. My style and techniques are inspired by the original illustrations in The Brothers Grimm books and the linework was done in the engravings by Albrecht Durer using cross contour and cross hatching to create his prints. My goal is to have the audience connect to their childhood stories.
